Owners of Southern California Environmental Consulting Firm Charged with Fraud

Water Board and State Attorney General Announce Arrests

The California Environmental Protection Agency's State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB/Water Board) announced today the State's AG's office charged owners of a Santa Barbara-based environmental consulting firm with fraudulently obtaining money from the SWRCB's Underground Storage Tank Cleanup Fund (Cleanup Fund).

The Water Board is taking steps to deter fraud against the UST Cleanup Fund.  The goal of these efforts is to deter claimants and contractors from submitting fraudulent claims.  This enforcement initiative is using tools developed by the Water Board's Fraud, Waste, and Abuse Prevention Unit over the last 24 months.  Staff conducting the project have developed technicques for conducting audits and investigations to detect fraudulent activity.  The Water Board is also working with the AG's Office to develop protocols to prosecute fraudulent claims and recover funds back to the Cleanup Fund.  The Water Board plans to continue the enforcement project for at least the next year.  The UST Enforcement Manager is Kimberly Sellards, PG.
